The 2023 edition of the Boston Marathon will take place on Monday April 17th, 2023 in the great city of Boston, Massachusetts. The 127 edition of this historic event has been traditionally hosted on a Monday in the spring month of April. In 2014 Eritrean-American legend Meb Kiflezghi won the race when he ended a 31-year drought for U.S. runners, after holding off Wilson Chebet of Kenya in a race that came down to the final mile. The great part of the win was that Meb was able to win this prestigious event at the age of 38. This year’s edition will have many East African runners including Eritrean runners. The three Eritrean runners participating are New York city marathon winner Ghirmay Ghebreslassie who is making a strong come back after a successful 2021-2022 season. It is to be recalled that Ghirmay won the 2015 World Athletics Championship in Beijing, China, as he became the youngest winner of the race at age 19. He also became the first Eritrean to win a gold medal at the World Championships. Then a year later on November 6th, 2016, Ghirmay became the youngest male to ever win the NYC marathon at age 20. Ghirmay has a great chance to make another history in Boston as Eri-internationalsports.org wishes the young man who is now only 27 much success as he continues to build on his career.
Meanwhile, Eritrean Filmon Ande who has had a lot of success in half marathons and is ranked in the top 100 in the full marathon category will be competing for the first time in this big event. Filmon has a very respectful record as a runner and this year’s Boston Marathon could be a great way to shine at the international stage.
In the women’s race Eritrea’s up and coming star Nazreth Woldu who had an incredible 2022 season will make her debut in Boston. Going head to head against some of the best female runners in the world this could be a great way to see how this amazing runner will fare. The Boston Marathon will take place on Monday and here is some information for those who will be watching or attending in Boston to support our Eritrean stars. As always we urge our Eritrean community in Boston to carry the flag and support these runners.
